Support Child & Family - Make A Donation!
Your gift brings help, hope and new beginnings
Every day, people come together at Child & Family: to give help, to receive help, and to support the
work of others. Why? We think it’s because our supporters share our two core beliefs:
- Individuals and communities thrive when supported by strong families.
- A community works best when it accepts responsibility for all of its members.
These beliefs influence everything we do and have guided our growth since we first opened our doors
in 1866. Child & family has always been a place where community members can come together to help
each other.
When you make a donation to Child & Family you’re helping people right here, in your own community,
and you’re helping to ensure that we’ll be there to help you, if you ever need us.
Help Child & Family reach out to meet the changing needs of Newport County families. Every donation,
no matter the size, will foster our continued growth and success. If you want to make a difference
and donate to Child & Family it is easy! Simply fill out our Donation Form below and Press Send.
Leadership Giving Societies
We, at Child & Family, are very grateful for the generous financial support received from our many
donors. Your gifts foster the continued success and future growth of Child & Family as a vital
service provider in Newport County. Without your support, Child & Family could not achieve the
level of program services that are needed by so many within our community. Although all gifts, no
matter their size, are important to our success, the following giving societies have been
established to honor donors whose annual donation reaches a higher level of support.
Sign up to be a member of a Child & Family Giving Society. Child & Family has a long and rich
history, and our Leadership Giving Societies are named for important people in our history:
Grevette Society - $250-$499
The Grevette Society is named for Mr. Delbert W. Grevette who grew up in the Home for Friendless
Children in the 1920’s. He entered the orphanage at the age of 5 in 1927. Grevette’s life is a
prime example of the positive impact and powerful effect Child & Family has on the lives of
children. Delbert Grevette was beloved by the staff of the Home for Friendless Children, and was a
role model for the younger boys as he grew older. After Mr. Grevette left the home as a young man,
he attended St. Andrew’s School in Barrington, Rhode Island and then spent a year studying at the
Rhode Island School of Design. He returned to the Home often to visit with the younger boys, help
out with needed repairs, and just enjoy a good meal with his friends on the staff. Mr. Grevette
enlisted in the Navy during World War II. He was killed aboard the USS Buck off the coast of Italy
when his ship was torpedoed and sunk. Delbert Grevette is well remembered in the history of Child &
Family, which was written by Mrs. Vera Mason in 1996.
Members of the Grevette Society will receive recognition in the Child & Family Annual Report,
newsletter “24”, and on the Child & Family web site. Members will also receive special recognition
at the Child & Family Annual Meeting, as well as a special memento of appreciation from Child &
Family.
Thorndike Society - $500-$999
The Thorndike Society is named for Mrs. Sophia Thorndike, who served as the first Directress of the
Home for Friendless Children. Mrs. Thorndike took administrative responsibility for the Home when it
opened with 5 children in 1866. Mrs. Thorndike set the standard of quality and compassion in a home
for children in need – a home that was to become one of the most important social service providers
on Aquidneck Island.
Members of the Thorndike Society will receive all of the recognition listed for the Grevette
Society. Members will be invited to attend special events addressing important topics that affect
Child & Family and our community. Members will also receive an additional special memento of
appreciation from Child & Family.
Townsend Society - $1,000 or more
The Townsend Society is the highest-level of support within the Child & Family Donor Recognition
Program. It is named for Mr. Christopher Townsend, and his sister, Miss Ellen Townsend. On
September 16, 1867, a house on the corner of School, Mary and High Streets (current headquarters of
Child & Family) along with the sum of $500 for repairs was given by Mr. Townsend at the instigation
of his sister, Miss Townsend, who served on the board of the Home for Friendless Children.
Members of the Townsend Society will receive all of the recognition listed for the Grevette and
Thorndike Societies, and will be invited to a special annual event to be hosted by the executive
leadership of Child & Family.
